Christ Is Not His Last Name

You may think it is not really important, but when we refer to our Saviour just as “Jesus Christ,” we are not only doing Him a great injustice but also denying ourselves the awesome power of the gift of the anointing which He carries and whose authority we have to use it.

Also, if you study it, a word is “missing”, and that word is “the“.

The more correct title is “Jesus the Christ.”

Believers accept that Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Lord God Almighty, whom He sent to this earth with a specific role to fulfil, and in a specific form to fulfil it. He is also the epitome of the Father. The absolute character of God. He carries the spiritual essence given to us so we may fulfil God’s plan and His will in our lives. Jesus is also the perfect example of both the spiritual and the physical example that God created us to be and in which we can perfectly perform His will in our individual lives.

Jesus is His actual given name:

(Mat 1:16)  And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

(Mat 1:21)  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

(Mat 1:25)  And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
Ancient Jews usually had only one name, and, when greater specificity was needed, it was customary to add the father’s name or the place of origin. In His lifetime, Jesus was called Jesus, son of Joseph (Luke 4:22; John 1:45, 6:42), Jesus of Nazareth (Acts 10:38), or Jesus the Nazarene (Mark 1:24; Luke 24:19). After His death, He came to be called Jesus Christ. Christ was not originally a name but a title derived from the  Greek word christos, which translates the Hebrew term meshiah (Messiah), meaning “the anointed one.”

Christ’s anointing is the divine empowerment given to Jesus by the Holy Spirit to fulfill His mission as Savior, King, and High Priest. The word Christ itself means “Anointed One.”

This anointing is not oil on His head — it’s the fullness of God’s Spirit resting on Him, enabling Him to:

  • proclaim the gospel
  • heal the broken
  • defeat the works of darkness
  • rule as God’s chosen King
  • offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice

The Biblical foundation

1. Prophetic expectation

The Old Testament promised a coming figure who would be anointed by God:

  • Isaiah 61:1 — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me…”
  • Psalm 2 — God’s anointed King who will rule the nations
  • Daniel 9:25 — “Messiah the Prince” (Messiah = Anointed One)

2. Jesus’ baptism

When Jesus was baptized:

  • The Holy Spirit descended on Him (like a dove)
  • The Father declared Him His beloved Son

This moment publicly marked His Spirit-anointing for ministry.

3. Jesus’ own claim

In Luke 4, Jesus reads Isaiah 61 and says:

“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

This when He directly identified Himself as the Anointed One.

What the anointing empowered Jesus to do

1. As Prophet

Speak God’s truth with authority Reveal the Father Proclaim the kingdom

2. As Priest

Intercede for humanity Offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice Cleanse sin once for all

3. As King

Defeat Satan and Establish God’s reign and Rule forever

Christ’s anointing is the fullness of divine authority and power for all three offices

How Christ’s anointing relates to believers

This is where it gets beautiful.

Scripture teaches that believers share in His anointing, not as mini‑Messiahs, but as people united to Him:

  • 1 John 2:20 — “You have an anointing from the Holy One.”
  • 2 Corinthians 1:21–22 — God “anointed us” and sealed us with the Spirit.

This means:

  • You participate in His mission
  • You carry His Spirit
  • You walk in His authority (under Him)
  • You are empowered to live out His life in the world

It’s His anointing flowing through His people; it is not a separate or independent power.

In one sentence

Christ’s anointing is the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence that equips Jesus to be the Messiah — and through Him, empowers His people to live out His mission.
